I'm a little confused at the huge mental gymnastic feat Powell accomplished the moment she began to speak when she roughly stated that it was a relief to be out from under a 'wrongful criminal prosecution.' But that isn't even what a pardon is in the first place. A pardon only lifts the verdict and the sentence from its beneficiary, it is not a proclamation that they did not in fact commit the crime of which they were found guilty at the conclusion of a valid prosecution.

To say the prosecution itself is invalid is to suggest that a pardon isn't even needed because the person is not guilty of anything. I'm no lawyer obviously, but I think part of the social contract that even allows our legal system to issue pardons is that everyone, be it the judge, the lawyer, the criminal, and even the President issuing the pardon is tacitly admitting that the pardoned criminal is in fact guilty of the crime that is being absolved.

If we can't trust the actual procedure of the judicial system, what is even the point of having due process or any other aspect of our legal system?

This isn’t about the honesty, it’s about the pay day. People through out the entire world have done a lot of really bad things for a lot less money. Example: most hookers or prostitute’s will do some really nasty and immoral things just for a few bucks. How is this woman any different?
