    Did I once read that the only debt the US Federal government ever defaulted on was money lent to fight the American Revolution? Officers during the revolution occasionally paid for their soldiers commissary and were not repaid, or were not repaid until as late as 1812.

    I believe soldiers in both the French and Indian war and the American Revolution also received land grants in payment.
